Painting Courses

Watercolour behaves (and can misbehave), like no other medium.  First time painters can find it difficult to master, while more advanced watercolourists often reach a threshold beyond which they find it difficult to develop.  Books, videos and TV programmes can be very informative, but have one major disadvantage - there is no feedback or constructive appraisal of your work as you try to progress.

I run courses which explain from first principles how to master the watercolour medium and to develop a style which is all your own.  Courses are clearly structured and are designed to develop your ability to express yourself through a number of logical steps.  The course includes:

  • A general introduction to the working properties, advantages and disadvantages and a host of applications of the various paints, brushes and papers.
  • Looking at tone - what tone is; its importance in modelling your subjects; how to see tonal relationships clearly and record them accurately; worked examples.
  • Looking at colour in theory and in practice including the primaries and secondaries; colour temperature; theory and importance of the complementaries ; a logical guide to mixing the colours you want; worked examples.
  • Composing your work - choosing and arranging you and your subject to get the best results.
  • Depth in your work - using composition and the principles of linear and aerial perspective and their importance.
  • Alternative techniques and terminology - a whole armoury of techniques, including wet-in-wet, lost and found edges, dry brush, line and wash, masking, sponging, spatter, plus lots more, and examples of how and when to use them.
  • Improving your drawing technique - Studies in line and studies intone as a preparation for watercolour, including lots of tips on training your eye to see more and to capture the most important information.

As a member of a small, friendly and informal group, you will work from life, (including outdoors where the season and light permit) and the course will look at the work of several other artists, including my own work in progress, to help improve your understanding of the medium.  There will also be lots of opportunities to discuss your own work as you wish, as you progress.

Courses cost £85 and consist of nine classes, each of 2½ hours.  There is a choice of either  Thursday morning or evening classes and courses are held at the Old School, Vicarage Lane, Dore, Sheffield.

Places are now booking for the next evening watercolour course which will begin on Thursday 27 March 2008
